About the judge

Our judge for this contest was Jocelyne Benzakin, owner of Sag Harbor Picture Gallery in Sag Harbor, New York USA and former owner of J. B. Pictures Ltd. which was one of the foremost photo agencies in the world until she closed the company to pursue her dream of owning a photo gallery. Jocelyne has been influential in the careers of many photographers with her ability to recognize new talent. Many of her "proteges" have gone on to have highly succesful careers in editorial and art photography.

If you would like to learn more about Jocelyne Benzakin we invite you to read a story recently published in East Hampton Star reprinted by permission at Field and Forest.

Photographer's Comments

Carandal - Photo © 2000 by: Ricardo Campos
Photograph: Carandal
Location: Paraguay Republic
Date taken: January 2000
Equipment used: Nikon N70. 35-75mm 1:3.3 lens with polarazing filter.

Comments: This picture shows the homogenious natural Caranda forest. These species are present in many areas along the Paraguay river. Caranda is also an indicator of areas which occasionally flood.

Second Place - Allan MacKinnon

Sunrise Reflections - Photo © 2000 by: Allan MacKinnon
Photograph: Sunrise Reflections
Date taken: August 1998
Location: Marathon Florida, USA
Equipment used: Canon EOS Elan II - Tamron 28 - 80 mm.

Comments: Taken at sunrise looking north over Florida Bay.

Third Place - Tony Brick

Frozen Trees - Photo © 2000 by: Tony Brick
Photograph: Frozen Trees
Date taken: January 1, 2000
Location: Keuruu, Finland
Equipment used: Canon EOS 50 and 75-300mm lens with Kodak EBX-100 slide film.

Comments: One of my first pictures for the new year-thankfully the weather cleared for the first time in about two weeks.

Honorable Mention - Rod Miller

After the Storm Photo © 2000 by: Rod Miller
Photograph: After the Storm
Date taken: February 2000
Location: Missouri Ozarks (Rogersville, MO) USA
Equipment used: Sony DCR-TRV510.

Comments: This photo was taken after a storm had passed though the area. After a good long series of winds and heavy rains, nature again surprised me with a beautiful sunset.

Honorable Mention - Tracy A. Marciano

Tails from the Sea Photo © 2000 by: Tracy A. Marciano
Photograph: Tails from the Sea
Date taken: Unknown
Location: Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA
Equipment used: Nikon N70, Tamron 100-300 lens, Kodak E100VS slide film.

Comments: I was whale watching in Cape Cod. I never thought I would actually be able to see a whale on the excursion, so when this moment came I was in complete awe of the graceful elegance of these wonderful creatures.

Full Text of Judge's Comments

It was difficult for me to judge a photo contest on a computer.....I loved the idea that pictures are transmitted so fast from all over the world, but the little details got a bit diluted on a monitor screen....Well, I have joined this new century, and judged my fist photo contest on the web..... It was a great honor..

There were many great pictures that reflected the beauty of nature..some were like a Cezanne's paintings, others were reflections on our environment and others were captured moments. Thank you for the opportunity....

I will finish with one of my favorite quote....

"The heart and the mind are the true lens of the photogapher" .....Gordon Parks
