About the judge
Our judge for this contest was art dealer and gallery owner, Barry Whistler, of Barry Whistler Gallery in Dallas Texas. Barry is widely recognized as a preeminent judge of new talent and has helped launch the careers of numerous artists working in a wide variety of mediums - including, of course, photography. His name is respected throughout the art community for the dedication and vision he has exhibited in the more than 20 years he has been in the art field since beginning at the Dallas Museum of Art in 1971. Barry is among the elite few who have helped shape the look and feel of modern art through his subtle sense of style and power of vision.
Craig Anderson, exhibitions administrator of SITE Santa Fe, said of Barry in a recent Dallas Morning News article, "He's the first guy there, the first to recognize true talent, and everybody else falls in behind. In a business that can be a shark tank, miraculously this guy (Barry) prevails."
We are very appreciative of Barry's willingness to judge the Field and Forest Nature Photo Contest and provide his comments on the winning entries.

Photographer's Comments
First Place - Tony Brick

Photograph: Lily of the Valley
Location: Finland
Date taken: 1999
Equipment used: Canon EOS 50 with transparency film
Web site: Tony Brick Photography and the Field and Forest Members Gallery
Comments: This photo was taken last summer using various lenses and attachments to give me a homemade macro lens.
Second Place - Greg Summers

Photograph: Sawhill Ponds Wildlife Refuge
Date taken: September 16th, 1999
Location: East of Boulder, Colorado, USA
Equipment used: Nikon N90s, Tamron 28-200 lens, on Provia film
Web site: Colorado Photos and the Field and Forest Members Gallery
Comments: The refuge is a series of ponds and wetlands reclaimed from gavel pits. On 2 sides, there are still active gravel pits and at the west end is Boulder's community airport. Under most circumstances, this image would be cluttered with power lines, cars and trucks.
As I walked around the refuge (which is one of my favorite places to shoot early in the morning or at sunset), I saw the three bushes aligned in the pond. In spite of the steep, muddy embankment, I knew what I wanted. I came very close to sliding, camera and all, into the pond as I positioned the tripod, half in, half out of the water. I had to hurry because the fog was quickly lifting.
It wasn't until I had the slides developed that I realized just how peaceful and serene that moment had been. I guess that's why I love photography. It's for those surprises in a moment of special light or peace that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
Third Place - Kelly Knudson

Photograph: Mt. Tom Creek
Date taken: May 27, 2000
Location: Hoh Rainforest Olympic National Park
Equipment used: Canon Elan IIe Tokina 20-35 lens
Comments: This photo was made with a 15 second exposure at f 22 on Fuji Velvia.
Honorable Mention - Craig Harris

Photograph: Moon over Yosemite
Date taken: September 1998
Location: Yosemite National Park in California, USA
Equipment used: Nikon F3 w/Nikkor lens on Kodachrome 64
Comments: I love the light quality in Yosemite in the Fall.
Honorable Mention - Stanley Kendall

Photograph: Polyphemis on Oak
Date taken: 1999
Location: Taken in my Nature Studio with closeup rings or tubes
Equipment used: Minolta Camera with no filters, hand held with two strobe units set at 45 degrees toward the subject at f22 aperture preferred camera setting.
Comments: I marvel at the thought that God went to so much trouble to create such a fragile creature and to me so beautiful. Imagine, they say that the wings are covered with maybe one million scales!
Honorable Mention - Jeremy Smith

Photograph: Fort Myers Sunset
Date taken: May 2000
Location: Fort Myers Beach, Florida, USA
Equipment used: Canon EOS Rebel G using a 300mm lens on Kodak 400 asa color film.
Comments: This was just beautiful to see in person....
