Photographer's Comments
First Place - Dolores Neilson

Photograph: Driven Snow
Date taken: January, 2003
Location: Cheshire, CT, USA
Equipment used: Canon Powershot G1
Comments: This image was not happenstance. My vision was to create a simple photo with simple colors using a sandpit I had discovered in a neighboring town over the summer. Patience is a virtue... today was the perfect day for my vision to materialize....freshly fallen snow, a perfect blue sky and a gusty wind.
Second Place - Mundy Hackett

Photograph: Winter's Demand
Date taken: Winter 2003
Location: Missouri, USA
Equipment used: Canon Eos3
Website: Mundy Hackett Nature Photography
Comments: Having recently moved to the midwest (Missouri), I was captivated by this scene of trees covered in a thick layer of frost and snow
during 2003.
Third Place - Amy Gonzales

Photograph: Winter Sun
Date taken: December 2002
Location: Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, Alaska, USA
Equipment used: Minolta XG 1
Comments: I took my dog for a walk, and brought my camera along when I took this shot. I had hoped that it would come out as nice as it looked that day. I did not use filters or change the film or shot in any way.
Honorable Mention - Terry Cervi
Photograph: Frozen Mist
Date taken: Winter 2003
Location: Niagara Falls, USA
Equipment used: Minolta Dimage 7i
Comments: Most tourists don't get to see just how beautiful this park is when the mist from the falls covers the trees and landscape and freezes into a thick coating of ice.
Judge's Comments:
General Comments: This contest was peculiar. No thought was given to the type of images chosen. We merely selected the best of the entries. In the end we had chosen four images, each a winter landscape. This is the first time that one type of image, landscape, has won in every place.
It was an exceedingly difficult judging. That is why these images are not being commented on individually in our usual way of doing things. There was a mere snowflake's width between them. Any of these images could have taken first place. Alas, we had to choose a selection. There is no particular reason why one was named first and another third. In the end, the selection came down to feeling and mood.
Each judge was moved in a different way with each photograph. So, in the final analysis we have little to say but congratulations to each photographer for some very fine work.
