Photograph: Dawn's Magic
Date taken: February 2003
Location: York Haven, PA, USA
Equipment used: Unknown
Comments: This is the forest behind my home, taken just as the sun was coming up. The light gives it such a magical look. I had to take a picture.
Second Place - Diane Schafer

Photograph: Butterfly Petals
Date taken: Unknown
Location: Unknown
Equipment used: Sony Cyber-shotWebsite: Diane's Photo Gallery
Comments: I made the image of this butterfly outside Butterfly World as it landed on a sunflower.
Third Place - Drake Olmstead
Photograph: Sandhill Crane
Date taken: April 2003
Location: Battle Creek Michigan, USA
Equipment used: Nikon D100
Comments: I love taking pics of Sandhill Cranes, as they are an amazing bird and are very elusive to find. I have a pair of them I am now observing in their nesting site. I plan to go back once in a while, to the pond where they little ones should appear in the future.
Honorable Mention - Brian L. Zimmerman

Photograph: Norfolk Island Pine
Date taken: April 2003
Location: Washington, DC, USA
Equipment used: Canon Pro 90 IS
Comments: The fresh spring growth at the tips of each branch really caught my eye, so I wanted to capture those contrasting shades of green as well as the details of this magnificent pine.
Judge's Comments:
First Place: "Dawn's Magic" This image shows you what beautiful light can do to make an image magical. The sun filtering through the trees in the background combined with the contrast of the more shadowed areas in the foreground make this image fitting of its title.
Second Place: "Butterfly Petals" You can imagine how many butterfly photos we receive in this contest. Only the best make the cut. This image was chosen not only for composition but for the lens choice. Using a wider lens to make this photo places the viewer in the world of the butterfly. Shooting the photo at butterfly level helps enhance the feeling.
Third Place: "Sandhill Crane" Photographing majestic images of birds in flight is not as easy at it may appear. If the shutter speed is too fast then the background could be obtrusive. If it is too slow then it becomes difficult to maintain sharpness. Shooting at near eye-level helped this photo too. These elements mixed with an almost angelic light on the crane's wings makes it a beautiful image.
Honorable Mention: "Norfolk Island Pine" Color, light, composition and immaculate focus in this image reveals a lush environment at macro level. The light in this image is another terrific example of how even the most "mundane" subjects can become winners through the skillful eye of an excellent photographer.
