First Place - Chris Carpenter

Photograph: Latourell Falls
Date taken: Unknown
Location: Latourell Falls, Columbia Gorge, OR, USA
Equipment used: Canon EOS Elan 7e.
Comments: Sometimes equipment or situational limitations can lead a photographer to look for alternative prospectives- It was difficult to compose such a tall, narrow waterfall in any dramatic fasion. Lighting was challenging at the top of the falls as well, so I began to look for a different way of representing the beauty of the scene before me.
Second Place - Tricia Sullivan

Photograph: Spotlight
Date taken: Fall 2000
Location: Bahama
Equipment used: Kodak digital.Website:T D Gallery
Comments: I was walking along the beach looking over the changes and turmoil that the tropical storm had created, and the sun broke through the storm clouds for one brief moment. It was as if heaven was saying everything would be ok.
Third Place - Sarah Collier

Photograph: Moulting
Date taken: August 2001
Location: Auburn, Alabama, USA
Equipment used: Unknown.
Comments: This photo is of an Eastern Screech Owl named Garfunkle. I've taken thousands of pictures at the Raptor Center where I volunteer my time to help care for and educate the public about the importance of nature conservation, particularly birds of prey. This picture truly caputures Garfunkle's personality and the uniqueness of the experience I have had with my work there.
Honorable Mention - Ahmed Hadrovic

Photograph: Autumn
Date taken: Autumn 2001
Location: Dalyan-Fenerbahce, Turkey
Equipment used: Minolta X 370s.
Comments: The atmosphere after a rain helped make this photo very strong I think.
Honorable Mention - Dan Doucette

Photograph: Swimming Eagle
Date taken: June 2003
Location: Sabourin Lake, Ontario, Canada
Equipment used: Minolta digital.
Comments: I was fishing with my son and we were watching two eagles circling while they fished. Suddenly one swooped down on the other with a viscious attack. The "victim" plummeted to the water and appeared dead. As we approached it, it seemed to regain its senses and began using its wings to paddle to shore. While relieved that the eagle appeared to recover, watching him paddle was a most unlikely site. Perhaps the most amazing part was the eagle managed at all times to retain its dignity, and its sense of power.

Photograph: Blue Cypress Lake
Date taken: April 2003
Location: Indian River County Florida, USA
Equipment used: Nikon n90sComments: I am a retired commercial photographer based in Vero Beach Florida. I only shoot now for fun and relaxation. This particular image was captured at Blue Cypress Lake in Indian River County Florida.
Judge's Comments:
First Place: "Latourell Falls" What an inviting image. The photographer used thoughtful composition and a slow shutter speed to capture the timeless beauty of a waterfall. One of the best we have seen in a while.
Second Place: "Spotlight" Images like this don't happen everyday. And yet, it is a universal experience to see sun shafts breaking through dense clouds. The composition is simple and direct. Sometimes it is best to simply let the subject "shine" through.
Third Place: "Moulting" How could anyone look at this photo without smiling? We loved this photo. It was the perfect angle and lens choice. Combine this with the beautiful greens in the background and those amazing eyes and it's easy to say this is a winner.
Honorable Mention: "Autumn" Leaf photos come and go in this contest. It is always a triumph when a photographer examines a subject done so many times and comes back with a wonderful image filled with the rich colors of Autumn.
Honorable Mention: "Swimming Eagle" Now and then we receive the truly unusual image. Sometimes an image is striking simply due to subject matter. This is a perfect example. How many times have YOU seen an eagle swimming? This is another good example of why you should keep your camera with you at all times. Kudos to the photographer for producing a tight crop.
Honorable Mention: "Blue Cypress Lake" It seems strange to shoot a black and white image at a place called Blue Cypress Lake. But, thanks to the excellent compositon and lighting this image transcends the norm into a universal scene of beauty. The end result is an image which could have been made anywhere.
