Photograph: Flower With a Bite
Date taken: March 2002
Location: Cano Palma, Costa Rica
Equipment used: Canon G2 camera on macro setting.
Comments: I wanted to get a picture of this beautiful purple flower when I noticed the snake. I thought the snake would just add some extra interest to the photo. As I was taking the picture, it became evident that the snake did not like cameras. I think the end result is an amazing contrast between the peaceful flower and the disturbed snake. I took three shots and left the snake to enjoy his flowery perch.
Second Place - Kirsi Jarvinen

Photograph: Tanzania
Date taken: June 2003
Location: Serengeti, Tanzania
Equipment used: Unknown.
Comments: At 6:30AM I heard the gallop of hundreds of wildebeest approaching..just in time to witness their early morning drink break.
Third Place - Jim Mulvihill

Photograph: Sequoia Buck
Date taken: August 2003
Location: Mariposa Grove, Yosemite National Park, USA
Equipment used: Nikon N6006.
Comments: The buck was resting in the hollow of an ancient sequoia tree and patiently allowed me to snap a couple of quick shots. The play of light within the otherwise heavily shadowed grove produces an almost spiritual quality, serene, and yet, majestic.
The picture was taken with a Nikon N6006 with a 50mm Nikkor lens at f5.6 at 1/60 sec. on Fujicolor Super HQ, 200 speed. The negative was scanned on an Epson 2450 Photo at a resolution of 1200dpi. and adjusted in Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Honorable Mention - Mike Gildbert

Photograph: Clinch River Morning
Date taken: Fall 2002
Location: Tennessee, USA
Equipment used: Fuji S2Pro.
Comments: A peaceful fall morning watching the sun rise from the Clinch River, Tennessee.
Honorable Mention - Leslie Widing

Photograph: Spring
Date taken:May 2003
Location: Holly, Michigan, USA
Equipment used: Minolta XD11.
Comments: When I look at it, I just feel so peaceful.
Judge's Comments:
First Place: "Flower With a Bite" Snakes don't frighten us but this photo does. The photographer capture a rare encounter with nature, made the photo and decided it was time to leave. Sounds like a smart photographer. This photo easily rose above the others for capturing a moment in nature.
Second Place: "Tanzania" This is the kind of photo you hope you would get on an Africa safari. Africa's wild places are fast disappearing. It's nice to see a photo which captures more than a moment - but rather the wonder of Africa's past - and, we can only hope, a glimpse of its future.
Third Place: "Sequoia Buck" Wouldn't you love to find this scene? This is another rare encounter. A majestic Buck inside an equally awe inspiring tree. How can you miss with these two elements together? We're glad the photographer didn't miss it.
Honorable Mention: "Clinch River Morning" We love these quiet moments. They may appear simple but the task of recording light, of finding the moment is more difficult than it may appear. It's wonderful when a photograph loses its "ego" and presents a wonder in nature for all top behold.
Honorable Mention: "Spring" Sometimes the simplest image, the obvious approach is not so obvious. Photographers search for the right branch, the perfect bud to make the photo. But here, the photographer takes a more simplified approach and presents a rich tapestry of Spring.
