Photographer's Comments

First Place - James Shadle

Osprey with Saltwater Catfish - Photo &copy 2002 by: James Shadle
Photograph: Osprey with Saltwater Catfish
Date taken: June 2001
Location: Honeymoon Island State Park , Florida, USA
Equipment used: Nikon F5 Nikon 600 AFS with TC14E

Comments: No comments provided.

Second Place - Heather McFarland

Rise And Shine - Photo &copy 2002 by: Heather McFarland
Photograph: Rise And Shine
Date taken: September 2002
Location: Clarkston, MI, USA
Equipment used: Nikon D1X, Nikkor 80-200 F2.8 ED, 1/350sec at F9.5, no filters

Comments: The clear orange sunrise and mist provide a nice backdrop to highlight reeds and lilly pads reflecting on Crooked Lake. This lake is located at Indepence Oaks County Park only 4 miles from my home. I shoot and hike at the park at least once a week and it has become my oasis from the hustle and noise of the busy suburbs. The lake is surrounded by many acres of nature trails to explore, and even if I don't find anything to photograph, I always leave there with a renewed spirit and sense of peace.

Third Place - Kathy Schneider

Tucked In - Photo &copy 2002 by: Kathy Schneider
Photograph: Tucked In
Date taken: March 2002
Location: Denver, CO, USA
Equipment used: Olympus E-20 digital

Comments: I came across this Swan napping at the Denver Zoo, I was able to shoot down on him and he put up with several different "takes", My goal was to get the total white shot with one eye and part of the beak without losing the detail of the feathers.

Honorable Mention - Heather McFarland

Mirrored Mums &copy 2003 by: Heather McFarland
Photograph: Mirrored Mums
Date taken: 2002
Location: Clarkston, MI, USA
Equipment used: Nikon D1X, 60mm Micro Nikkor. 1/30sec at F22, Tripod, natural light

Comments: Water has a wonderful reflective quality that can yield many photographic treasures and I always look for reflections in waterdrops on dewy mornings.

Honorable Mention - Terry Cervi

Searching Swan &copy 2002 by: Terry Cervi
Photography:  Ma's Rainbow
Date taken: 2002
Location: Niagra Falls, USA
Equipment used: Minolta DiMAGE 7i

Comments: This photograph of Niagara Falls has special meaning to me. I had taken my mother on a little day trip to the falls and she was looking on as I took this photo. As it turned out, it was one of the last trips we were able to take together. She suffered a stroke three weeks later and is in the hospital. I had originally titled the photo "Rainbow's End" but decided to dedicate it to her and changed the title to "Ma's Rainbow".

Honorable Mention - Lisa Young

Mr. Mallard &copy 2003 by: Lisa Young
Photography:  Mr. Mallard
Date taken: October, 2002
Location: Rocky Mountain National Park, USA
Equipment used: Sony DSC F707

Comments: I was in the Rocky Mountain National Park October 11, 2002 and saw these mallards swimming in the water next to the shore. So I sat down at their level and took this photo of the male mallard using a Sony DSC F707.

Judge's Comments

First Place: "Osprey with Saltwater Catfish" How does one beat a photo like this? It was an obvious winner. It's an exciting moment in nature which most of us rarely have a chance to witness.

Second Place: "Rise And Shine" The light, color and composition create a mood of tranquility in this photo. What a beautfiul scene.

Third Place: "Tucked In" Simple and graceful is the best way to describe this image. It was a delightful lens choice and composition - seeing this with a more graphic eye which leads the viewer to the primary focus of the image. It is the mundane made beautiful by good photography.

Honorable Mention: "Mirrored Mums" Dew and rain drops abound in nature. It's almost strange that a photo like this would be relatively rare in our inbox. We've seen only two (including this one) since we began the contest in 1999. It's a good example of "seeing."

Honorable Mention: "Ma's Rainbow" Beautifully composed and a great moment. Consider this image and realize how light and composition can turn almost any subject into a work of art. The falls are there everyday. Tens of millions of people have made photographs there. But, the photographer has shown us a unique and beautiful view.

Honorable Mention: "Mr. Mallard" Duck photos come and go in our inbox second only to photos of flowers. A few rise to the top. Anytime you photograph a common subject (see comment above) remember that it is seen and judged by all against the very best of their experience. This photo won because it has an intimacy brought by a clever, duck-level, angle. Nice work.
